These nine madrigals are settings of poetry by the Bengali writer Rabindranath Tagore.

The composer writes: “These pieces may be performed in any order, and any one or more of them may be used without the rest of the group. The performing group should be balanced and very small. A performance by five good, well-matched solo singers is a considered option. The part marked Quinto can be taken by a high tenor or low alto, for solo performance, and any combination of these for choral performance.”
